Electric cars are now a common sight on British and American roads, and governments are pushing to phase out new petrol and diesel cars over the coming years.
Fans of electric vehicles love the quiet, smooth drive, the instant acceleration and the low running costs, especially for people who can charge at home overnight. There is no oil to change and far fewer parts to wear out.
Others are not convinced yet. The purchase price is still higher than many petrol cars, public chargers can be slow, busy or broken, and long trips need a little more planning. People who live in flats or terraced streets without a driveway often find charging the hardest part.
Hybrids sit in the middle, offering some electric driving with a petrol engine as backup.
