Parents, teachers and governments are increasingly worried about how social media affects young people. Concerns include screen time, sleep, online bullying, harmful content and pressure to look perfect.
Some countries have moved to restrict access for younger teenagers, and the debate has grown in both the UK and the US. Supporters of a ban say platforms are designed to be addictive, and that a clear legal age would make it easier for parents to say no.
Opponents argue that bans are hard to enforce, could push teenagers to less safe corners of the internet, and ignore the positives: staying in touch with friends, finding communities and learning new skills. Many prefer stronger parental controls, better age checks and safer design instead.
There is also the practical question of how age would be checked without collecting too much personal data.
