Halloween is one of the biggest nights of the year for children in the US, and it keeps growing in the UK. Costumes, carved pumpkins and bags full of sweets make it a highlight of the autumn.
But every year the same question comes up on doorsteps: when should kids stop going door to door? Some people happily hand out treats to anyone in a costume, teenagers included. They say it keeps older kids busy, safe and having harmless fun with friends.
Others feel trick-or-treating is meant for young children, and that groups of tall teenagers with no costume and a pillowcase take the magic out of it. A few towns in the US have even tried official age limits, which usually causes more arguments than it settles.
Many families find a middle ground: older children take younger siblings around, or switch to hosting parties instead.
