It is one of the oldest friendly debates there is, and millions of households in the UK and US have strong opinions on it.

Dog lovers point to loyalty, energy and endless enthusiasm. A dog is always happy to see you, gets you out for walks in all weathers and can become a true member of the family. The trade-off is time: dogs need training, exercise and company, and they are not easy to leave alone for long.

Cat lovers enjoy a more independent companion. Cats are quieter, need less space, are happy in a flat and can look after themselves for a working day. Their affection can feel more earned, which many owners say makes it more special.

Plenty of people love both, and some homes include a dog and a cat that get along surprisingly well.
