Tipping is part of everyday life in the US, where restaurant staff often rely on tips to make up their wages. In the UK, a service charge or a small tip is common in restaurants, but far less expected elsewhere.
Recently, many people feel the tip screen has followed them everywhere. Coffee shops, self-service kiosks, takeaway counters and even online checkouts now suggest 15, 20 or 25 percent. Some customers say they feel pressured to tip for very little service.
Others argue that tipping is the only way many low-paid workers can make a decent living, and that a small extra amount makes a real difference to them.
There is also a growing call for a simpler system, where prices include fair wages and tipping is only for truly great service.
