Streaming was supposed to be the cheaper, simpler alternative to cable and satellite TV. Now the shows are spread across Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Max and more, and prices keep rising.
Many households have found themselves paying for four or five services, sometimes without even remembering what is on each one. Adverts have also returned to cheaper plans, and password sharing has become harder.
Some viewers have started rotating: subscribe for a month to binge one series, then cancel and move on. Others have cut back to a single favourite service, and a few have returned to free TV, libraries and physical discs.
On the other hand, many people feel that the amount of quality content available is still excellent value compared with a night at the cinema.
