Some of the biggest films and TV series of recent years began life as novels. Fans often say the same thing as they leave the cinema: the book was better.
Books have room to explore characters' thoughts, side stories and small details that a two-hour film has to cut. Readers build the world in their own imagination, which can make any screen version feel a little disappointing.
But some adaptations are widely loved, and a few are even considered better than the original. Great actors, music and visuals can bring a story to life in a way that pages cannot. Films can also introduce a story to millions of people who would never pick up the book.
TV series have changed the debate too, as a long season can cover far more of the story than a single film.
