Both are called football, both fill huge stadiums and both have passionate fans, but they could hardly be more different.
Soccer, or simply football in the UK, is the world's most popular sport. The game flows for 45 minutes at a time with few stoppages, and a single goal can decide a match. The Premier League is followed around the globe, and soccer keeps growing in the US, especially since the 2026 World Cup was played there.
American football is built around strategy and short bursts of power. Every play is planned, the clock stops often, and big plays can swing a game in seconds. The NFL is the most watched sport in America, and the Super Bowl is one of the biggest TV events on the planet. NFL games in London also draw big crowds.
Fans of each often struggle to understand the appeal of the other.
