Few workplace debates have lasted as long as this one. Since the pandemic, millions of people have discovered they can do their jobs from the kitchen table, and many never want to go back.

Fully remote work means no commute, more time at home and often lower costs for lunches and travel. But it can also feel lonely, and some people find it harder to switch off or to learn from colleagues.

The office brings structure, quick conversations and a clearer line between work and home. Many employers say teamwork and training are simply better in person, and several big companies have asked staff to return most of the week.

Hybrid tries to offer the best of both: a few days in, a few days at home. Critics say it can mean commuting just to sit on video calls.
