Cards, phones and smartwatches have made paying quicker than ever. In many shops, cafes and transport networks in the UK and US, cash has become the exception rather than the rule, and some places no longer accept it at all.
Supporters of a cashless society say digital payments are faster, cleaner and easier to track. They make budgeting simpler and reduce the risk of being robbed or losing money.
But many people depend on cash. Older people, those on low incomes and people without bank accounts can find themselves shut out. Cash also works when the network goes down, and it offers a level of privacy that card payments do not. Some people simply find it easier to control spending when they can see the notes leaving their wallet.
Several places have introduced rules to protect access to cash for exactly these reasons.
