In Britain, how you make a cup of tea can say a lot about you, and few questions spark more friendly arguments than the order of milk and tea.
The tea-first camp says you should brew the tea properly in hot water and then add milk to taste. That way the water stays hot enough to draw out the flavour, and you can judge the colour exactly.
The milk-first camp has history on its side. In the days of delicate china cups, a splash of cold milk first was said to stop the cup from cracking. Some also say it gives a smoother taste when pouring from a teapot.
Across the Atlantic, many Americans prefer their tea iced, sweetened or without milk at all, which adds a third side to the debate.
