AI chatbots can explain a maths problem, summarise a novel or draft an essay in seconds. Students have noticed, and schools and universities are still working out how to respond.
Some teachers see AI as a powerful tutor. Used well, it can explain things in different ways, give instant feedback and help students who cannot afford private lessons. They argue that young people need to learn how to use these tools because they will use them at work.
Others worry that AI makes it too easy to skip the thinking. If a chatbot writes the essay, the student learns very little, and it becomes hard for teachers to grade work fairly. Some schools have moved more assessment back into the classroom as a result.
Many settle on rules: AI allowed for research and checking, but the final work must be the student's own.
